Steph Twell breaks Liz McColgan's Scottish marathon record in Frankfurt

Steph Twell has broken the Scottish marathon record, surpassing Liz McColgan's time set back in 1997.

The 30-year-old ran the Frankfurt Marathon in two hours, 26 minutes and 40 seconds, shaving 12 seconds off the time McColgan set 22 years ago.

It is the second record of McColgan's that has been broken recently after her daughter Eilish eclipsed her at the Great South Run time earlier this month.

Twell finished eighth in Frankfurt and is well inside the Olympic qualifying mark for Tokyo 2020.

The Scot won a bronze medal in the 5000m at the Rio Games in 2016.

Another record also tumbled in Germany as Kenya's Valary Jemeli Aiyabei won the race and set a course record of 2:19:10.

After the race, Aiyabei said: “My aim was to break my personal best. Running alone isn’t easy. I had to struggle and grind it out.”
