RAF veteran Rachel Williamson has been unveiled as Team UK's first female Invictus Games captain for the fifth edition of the event at The Hague in 2020.

Ms Williamson is a former medic and physical training instructor but was medically discharged in 2016 following an injury while on a training camp with the RAF Women's Rugby Union team two years previously.

Over four years, what started as a thumb sprain progressed into a neurological disorder which left her with minimal function and loss of grip in her right arm, forcing her to leave in 2018 after ten and a half years' service.

Rachel went on to compete in the 2018 Invictus Games where she won two gold medals, three silvers and one bronze.

The appointment was announced by Prince Harry during the official team launch at the Honourable Artillery Company in London. 

Williamson will head up a mixed group of 65 sportsmen and women who will compete in a Paralympics-style event across nine sports from athletics, archery, wheelchair basketball, cycling, powerlifting, indoor rowing, wheelchair rugby, swimming and sitting volleyball. 

Speaking about the Games, she described them as "an amazing opportunity through sport to regain that sense of pride which can be lost following the onset of mental or physical disabilities".

The athletes will continue to train until May in various locations around the country as part of Help for Heroes' Sports Recovery programme before heading to the The Hague as one of the 19 national teams competing from May 9-16.
