23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams believes more tournaments should offer equal prize money to women and men.

Female players currently get paid the same as their male counterparts in Grand Slams and big tournaments like Indian Wells, but Williams believes this needs to change.

The 38-year-old mother of one did not hold back saying: "I deserve to get paid the same amount.

"I don't deserve less 'cause I have boobs and they don't. That's definitely not the case. I worked just as hard since I was three. I think they worked hard since they were three, four, two, whatever the case is."

"I definitely know my whole life has been dedicated toward being a top athlete, and I shouldn't get paid less because of my sex."

Williams also argued it was unfair of players and coaches to criticise her over her commitment to the sport.

She said: "A lot of players or a lot of coaches tell me that Serena is so lucky. She doesn't train. She just shows up and wins matches.

"God, if I could do that, I would. Oh I would do it," she said.

Serena returns to action in January and will be hoping to land the 24th Grand Slam title that will bring her level with Australian Margaret Court's all-time record.
