Three-time grand slam champion Angelique Kerber ‘cannot imagine’ playing in US Open

Three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber has admitted she doesn’t feel comfortable about getting on a plane and flying to the US Open next month.

The tournament is set to begin on August 31 at Flushing Meadows, and is the first major tournament to get underway since the sport was suspended in March.

Top tennis stars such as Simona Halep, Ashleigh Barty, Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal have all cast doubt over whether they will compete or not.

Kerber, 32, has now revealed that she is also hesitant to participate in the event.

The former world No 1 said: "As of today, I can honestly say, I can’t imagine it.

"I don’t think anyone wants to get in a plane and fly to New York. It is currently incredibly difficult to plan.

"Nobody knows at the moment what is going to happen and what will happen next.

“Even if the organisers say that they are playing, it does not mean for me that I also automatically participate.”
