Trump threatens to cut US funding to WHO after saying they 'blew it' over coronavirus call

US president Donald Trump has threatened to cut funding to the World Health Organisation after he accused them of 'missing the call' in the coronavirus pandemic.

Trump labelled WHO 'China-centric', insinuating the health organisation went along with Beijing's attempt at minimising the severity of the crisis.

WHO have applauded China's reaction to the pandemic, although it is believed the country has not been totally transparent with the number of cases and deaths.

Back in February, Trump's administration did call for America's funding of WHO to be reduced from $122.6 million down to $57.9 million.

Speaking at his daily press conference, he said: "They [WHO] called it wrong, called it wrong, they missed the call. They could have called it months earlier, they would have known and they should have known and they probably did know.

"We'll be looking into that very carefully and we're going to put a hold on money spent to the WHO. We're going to put a very powerful hold on it.

"It's a great thing when it works but when they call every shot wrong that's no good."

The president also tweeted before the conference: "The WHO really blew it. For some reason, funded largely by the United States, yet very China-centric. We will be giving that a good look.

"Fortunately I rejected their advice on keeping our borders open to China early on. Why did they give us such a faulty recommendation?"

In the White House briefing, Trump did backtrack and say he'd 'strongly consider' cutting funds.

WHO have denied Trump's claims, with UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said:  "It is clear that the WHO has done tremendous work on COVID-19.

"In supporting countries with millions of pieces of equipment being shipped out, on helping countries with training, on providing global guidelines - WHO is showing the strength of the international health system."

Trump's criticism of WHO may be seen as the president deflecting questions of his own conduct during this pandemic.
