Trump's approval rating falls amid concerns over handling of coronavirus crisis

US president Donald Trump's approval rating has fallen over the last week amid concerns over his handling of the coronavirus crisis.

A Reuteur and Ipsos poll found his rating had dipped to 42 per cent from 48 per cent over the last seven days.

His rating throughout his term has been around 40 per cent and, according to a survey by CNN, 45 per cent of Americans approve of Trump's response to the virus.

As the virus hit the country Trump's rating was the highest it has ever been in his presidency. But, as the reality of the pandemic set in, his approval from the nation took a downturn.

And where Trump's advisers are concerned is his match-up against Joe Biden, the most likely person to be standing against him in November's presidential election.

Former vice-president Biden has an approval rating of 53 per cent compared to Trump's 42.

The New York Times and Axios have both reported that Trump's senior aides are worried by his daily White House briefings.

One told The Times: “White House allies and Republican lawmakers increasingly believe the briefings are hurting the president more than helping him."

And former Trump nominee Stephen Moore told Axios: “The next 4-8 weeks is really going to decide whether Trump gets re-elected.”

White House spokesperson Judd Deer told The Times: "Any suggestion that President Trump is struggling on tone or message is completely false.”

This comes after over 2,000 people in America died from the coronavirus in the last day.

Just over 504,000 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the US and 18,763 people have died.
