The United Kingdom's  chief medical advisor Chris Whitty has said he is in self-isolation after experiencing coronavirus symptoms.

Whitty has been advising and working closely with prime minister Boris Johnson who has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Health secretary Matt Hancock also confirmed today that he has tested positive for the virus.

Whitty took to social media to update the public about his health. He wrote: "After experiencing symptoms compatible with COVID-19 last night, in line with the guidance, I will be self-isolating at home for the next seven days.

"I will be continuing to advise the Government on the medical response to coronavirus, supported by my deputies."

He has not been any more specific on which symptoms he has experienced.
