‘Hugely talented’ US boxer Travell Mazion, who’d never been beaten, dies in car crash aged 24

Unbeaten super-welterweight boxer Travell Mazion has died at the age of 24 following a car crash in Texas.

The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed the news with TMZ and said Mazion died on Wednesday in a head-on collision.

Mazion died at the scene, while a 61 year-old man who was driving the car he crashed into died later in hospital.

The boxer’s promoters, Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, released a statement paying tribute to him

They wrote: "We at Golden Boy are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Travell Mazion last night.

"Mazion was a kind, charismatic young man who lit up every room he walked into and brought excitement to fans inside the ring. We send our heartfelt prayers and thoughts to his family. May he R.I.P."

Other tributes have poured in on social media.

Oscar De La Hoya himself said: "I am still in disbelief. @black_magic92 you left us far too soon! Nice, young man with all the talent in the world.

“Not only did our sport take a huge hit with losing you but the world lost a good one. You are forever Golden. My heart & prayers are with you & your family champ.”

And boxer Vergil Ortiz Jr wrote: “I can’t believe it, R.I.P Travell Mazion. For those who don’t know him or never met him, he was a very talented boxer and one of the coolest people I knew. Always enjoyed watching him fight. Love you bro, watch over us”

The athlete made his boxing debut in 2013 and went on to maintain a 17-0 record.

The last time he was in the ring was in January as he fought and knocked out Fernando Castaneda in Texas.
