US soccer player Alex Morgan ‘proud’ to be a Barbie doll

US soccer star Alex Morgan has said she is excited and proud that Barbie have modelled a doll after her.

“I was obviously so excited. It's such an iconic brand, it's something that every kid plays with," Morgan said on a People magazine Instagram live with Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad.

"I feel like I worked really hard in helping design this and making it as real as possible. I tried to make it exactly as I would be on the soccer field, and I feel like they completely nailed it."

The doll, designed by Carlyle Nuera, is equipped with a red, white and blue kit, a football, removable boots and Morgan’s trademark pink hairband.

The World Cup winner added she wants it to inspire the next generation.

“Just to see what Barbie has been able to do to give us all a platform to give that generation that reality of being the next Alex Morgan, being the next Ibtihaj Muhammad.”

She follows stars such as Muhammad, Billie Jean King and Dina Asher-Smith in having the honour of becoming a Barbie doll.

And the next generation Morgan speaks of includes her newborn daughter, Charlie, who she welcomed with husband Servando Carrasco in May.

Doll creator Nuera said: “Alex's daughter can see how cool and inspirational her mom is.”

The release is a part of Barbie's Role Model Series and is available to buy at Target and the company’s website for $29.99.
