US World Cup Soccer Stars Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris tie the knot in front of star-studded congregation including Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan

Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris from the US World Cup winning soccer team topped off a phenomenal year with more silverware as they exchanged rings in front of friends and family at the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami.

Harris, 34, and Krieger, 35, who both play for Orlando Pride, announced their engagement in March ahead of a busy summer defending the title at the FIFA World Cup this summer in France.

Among the guests were team mates Megan Rapinoe and Abby Wambach as well Alex Morgan and Heather O’Reilly who both recently announced their pregnancies.

The festivities got underway with a dinner at Seaspice on Friday, with even more reason to celebrate as both Krieger and Harris had that day been announced on the preliminary list for the US team ahead of next year's Olympics.

Harris revealed that the wedding was a very special occasion for them and those closest to them saying: "This will be the first time in our relationship where all of our friends, all of our family are going to come together to be one and to celebrate us on a completely different level.

"I think so much of our support from our family and friends have been through soccer and this is just so much more meaningful, in my opinion, to be celebrated for love and acceptance and inclusion that's so major in the world we live in now."

She added: "I'm so excited to have this type of platform to have this type of visibility to be seen as a gay couple and it is accepted and it is important."

The pair admitted it was love at first sight when they saw the venue, with Krieger saying: It was this kind of Mediterranean castle-like vibe right on the water, this European-type vibe that we were going for. Right when we walked in we were like, ‘Oh my God. We love this and everyone else was going to love this and this is just … This is it'. ”

In honour of other American boundary breakers, the tables at the beautiful venue were given names such as Sally Ride, Anderson Cooper, Ellen DeGeneres, RuPaul, Harvey Milk and Billie Jean King.

The pair have delayed their honeymoon until after the 2020 Olympics but revealed they are hoping to go somewhere tropical.

“We’re going to plan to go on our dream honeymoon, which is hopefully going to be in the Maldives or Bora Bora on one of those little huts on the water,” said Krieger.

Although the use of phones was somewhat frowned upon, some snaps were taken at the reception, including a video of the first dance.
