Victorious Solheim Cup captain Catriona Matthew retains position for 2021

Europe's winning Solheim Cup captain Catriona Matthew has retained her role for the 2021 contest in Ohio.

The 50-year-old Scot led Europe to their first victory over the United States since 2013 at Gleneagles in September.

Matthew described the 14½-13½ Solheim win as the pinnacle of her career, topping her triumph at the 2009 Women's British Open.

She controversially included Suzann Pettersen in the team as one of her captain's picks, but doubts were quashed on the final day when Pettersen made a six-foot birdie on the 18th green to clinch victory.

And Pettersen, who announced her retirement following the triumph, praised Matthew for her leadership.

She said: "She's not only a Solheim Cup legend, but she's also a great leader, friend and mother.

"She had the faith in me to choose me as a wildcard pick, for which I will forever be grateful and she deserves all the credit."

Matthew now has her sights set firmly on leading Europe to what would be only their second ever victory on US soil.

"Winning the Solheim Cup in Scotland was a dream come true, but backing that up with a win in America would be even better," said the Edinburgh-born golfer who also made nine appearances as a player, winning three times.

"It's always harder to win on US soil, but I'm honoured to be tasked with the mission.

"I was lucky enough to be part of the first European team to win on US soil at Colorado Golf Club in 2013 and so know what's possible."
