Wales claim victory over England in first ever rugby league international

Wales clinched a 24-20 victory over the England Lions in their first international rugby league match.

The Lions, who hosted the match in St Helens, led 16-10 at half-time but the Welsh fought back to secure the win in their first ever recognised international game.

England's first team have been touring Papua New Guinea so the Lions were selected from Championship and League One sides.

Wales did face Great Britain Teachers back in October in a warm-up game, a match they lost 30-6.

Captain Rafiuke Taylor told NewsChain before the clash with England that her side had improved considerably since the defeat.

The 41-year-old said: "We've been making improvements to our game. There's a lot more structure to the game now, we're more aware of how different it is from union."
