WNBA announces plans to begin 2020 season this summer

The Women’s National Basketball Association has announced the 2020 season will begin in late July.

All 22-games of the regular season will be played at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

The traditional post-season format will follow and will run through October, and players are set to receive full salaries and benefits.

The 2020 season was due to start on May 15 but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Teams are set to head to Florida in early July to begin team training.

The league also confirmed they are working with medical specialists and public health experts on measures to put in place for the start.

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said: "We are finalising a season start plan to build on the tremendous momentum generated in the league during the offseason and have used the guiding principles of health and safety of players and essential staff to establish necessary and extensive protocols.

“Despite the disruption caused by the global pandemic to our 2020 season, the WNBA and its Board of Governors believe strongly in supporting and valuing the elite women athletes who play in the WNBA and therefore, players will receive their full pay and benefits during the 2020 season.”
