World champion Jamel Herring out of title bout after testing positive for coronavirus for SECOND time

World super-featherweight champion Jamel Herring’s fight on Tuesday has been called off after he returned a second positive coronavirus test.

The 34-year-old, who was due to take on Puerto Rican Jonathan Oquendo in Las Vegas, first tested positive for COVID-19 on June 22.

He then re-tested on July 3 and came back negative so his fight was set to go ahead.

But now having taken the antibody test the day before his scheduled fight, he has incredibly returned another positive test.

Speaking on Twitter along with a picture showing his positive antibody test, Herring said: "The moment I leave the MGM Grand, my antibody test results come back. I can’t win!

"It’s good to at least know I have the antibody in my system, that helps fight the virus now."

And as reported by BBC Sport, he added: "I am hoping my team can reschedule soon.

"I quarantined and recovered as directed by my doctor. I then retested on 3 July and my test was negative, so this result is a complete surprise."

Herring was initially in talks to fight Northern Ireland’s former world champion Carl Frampton in June before the coronavirus pandemic disrupted those plans.

And now a bout between the two looks set to be pushed back even further as Herring awaits a re-scheduled date for his clash with Oquendo.
