The top two ranked surfers in the world, Carissa Moore and Caroline Marks, will make up the first ever US Olympic surfing team in Tokyo 2020.

27-year-old three-time world champion, Moore, and 17-year-old Marks who made her debut on the World Surf League tour in 2018, qualified by reaching the final 16 at the Championship Tour Finale in Maui this weekend.

Fellow countrywoman Lakey Peterson is, however, out of contention.

The three surfers occupy the top spots in the world rankings but Olympic rules state that a maximum of two surfers per gender per nation can compete at the Tokyo Games.

Peterson's loss to two-time world champion Tyler Wright of Australia in the round of 16 means she will not make Tokyo.

She was visibly downheartened but complimentary of her countrywomen saying: “That was a rough blow, for sure, but that’s the way it goes. Great job to Carissa and Caroline. They’ve had incredible years.”

Moore and Marks will now battle it out for the championship title as the action continues today.
