Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has said it would be ‘foolish’ to re-open schools in the US and has called Donald Trump’s administration a ‘conductor-less orchestra’ for suggesting they do so.

The President wants schools and colleges re-opened in the autumn but he has been met with criticism due to the spread of the coronavirus.

Grohl was speaking on the first audio edition of his ‘Dave’s True Stories’, called ‘In Defence of Our Teachers’.

“Remote learning is an inconvenient and hopefully temporary solution," said Grohl.

"But as much as Donald Trump's conductor-less orchestra would love to see the country re-open schools in the name of rosy optics, ask a science teacher what they think about White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany's comment that 'Science should not stand in the way'.

"It would be foolish to do so at the expense of our students, teachers and school."

Earlier this month Trump threatened to withhold funding from schools who refused to re-open and he also hit out at the Centre For Disease Control And Prevention over their guidelines about returning in a series of tweets.

And despite dropping out of high school himself, Grohl revealed his passion behind wanting to defend teachers, like his mother Virginia. She is a retired teacher who he hails as an ‘engaging educator’.

He added he has spoken to his mother about what measures schools will have to put in place to re-open.

“Teachers are confronted with a whole new set of dilemmas that most people would not consider. There's so much more to be addressed than just opening the doors and sending [children] back home, my mother tells me on the phone.

"Now 82 and retired, she runs down a list of concerns based on her 35 years of experience: Masks and distancing, temperature checks, crowded bussing, crowded hallways, sports, air-conditioning systems, lunchrooms, public restrooms, janitorial staff. 

"Most schools already struggle from a lack of resources. How can they possibly afford the mountain of safety measures that will need to be in place?"

He also named other music stars who have been raised by school workers such as Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine and Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine.

The musician then noted teachers would be putting their lives at risk if schools were re-opened and emotionally reflected: “I can only imagine if my mother would now be forced to return to a stuffy, windowless classroom."
