Kyren Wilson and David Gilbert set up Masters quarter-final meeting

10 January 2021

Kyren Wilson and David Gilbert both reached the quarter-finals of the Betfred Masters after convincing first-round victories in Milton Keynes.

Wilson completed a 6-2 win over Gary Wilson, while Gilbert defeated Joe Perry by the same score.

Perry and Gary Wilson were appearing at the tournament as a late replacements for Judd Trump and Jack Lisowski, who both had to withdraw after testing positive for coronavirus.

Kyren Wilson and Gilbert will now meet in the last eight on Thursday.

Gary Wilson led 2-1 after a break of 85 in the second frame and a 43 clearance in the third. However, Kyren Wilson levelled with a superb break of 108 and also compiled a clearance of 136 in the seventh frame on his way to a comfortable win.

“I’m really please with that,” Kyren told the BBC. “My match play was really strong.

“I’ve been playing John Higgins for the last four days (in the Championship League) so if that’s not going to improve your match game I don’t know what is.

“The Masters is quite a high-pressure tournament and I had it in my head that if I can keep Gary under it, hopefully he would sort of suffer with a little bit of nerves and realise the occasion.”

Gilbert compiled breaks of 58, 62 and 60 on the way to a 4-0 lead at the interval with some assistance from Perry, who missed some routine shots and had looked poised to level the match at 1-1 until he missed an easy shot on the green.

A break of 71 in the fifth frame put Gilbert on the cusp of a whitewash. However, Perry restored some pride with a 73 and a break of 108, before bowing out of the competition.

It was a welcome result for Gilbert, who had been struggling for form this season and had written off his chances in Milton Keynes after originally being drawn against Trump.

“I’ve been bang out of form so it felt a lot better out there,” Gilbert told the BBC.

“When Boris Johnson was doing his announcement (about coronavirus restrictions), I was hoping they locked the whole thing down and closed sport off and everything. I was ready to go in my garage and grab a couple of beers and get drunk.

“I knew I had Judd, so as much as I was looking forward to it, I couldn’t see past him to be honest but it has turned out all right for me now.”
