Latics strengthen defensive numbers with triple signing

Oldham have made a trio of defensive signings just a day after appointing new manager Harry Kewell.

Portuguese full-back Sido Jombati has joined on a one-year contract after being released by Wycombe, while the Latics have also completed permanent deals for former loanees Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Carl Piergianni.

Jombati, 32, spent six years at Wycombe and won two promotions. He made only seven appearances as the Chairboys reached the Sky Bet Championship via the League One play-offs last season, but he racked up 185 outings in total during his time at Adams Park, scoring seven goals.

“I’m really excited to have moved up here and joined this club,” Jombati told the club’s official website. “Oldham Athletic is still massive, it has a passionate fan base and I’m ready to show everyone what I can do out on the pitch.”

Piergianni has signed a two-year deal at the club, having initially joined on loan from Salford in January.

“I always had the ambition of coming back to Boundary Park as I like to be fully committed to a club,” the 28-year-old said. “I wanted to come in and become a big part of the squad and pick up where I left off, with the support of the fans who have been amazing with me since I first arrived.”

Borthwick-Jackson made it a hat-trick of signings for Kewell on his first full day in charge, joining after his release by boyhood club Manchester United having made Oldham the latest in a string of loan clubs.

He said: “I’m really pleased to be back at the club and can’t wait to get going again. I enjoyed my loan spell last season and I’m pleased I’ve got another opportunity now to build on that.”
