Veteran striker Luke Varney has rejoined Burton as a player and fitness coach.

The 37-year-old leaves Sky Bet League Two Cheltenham to link up once again with Jake Buxton, who he has previously played with at Derby and the Brewers.

Manager Buxton told Burton’s website: “He’s an experienced player and is still as fit as a fiddle. We are very confident that he can still offer plenty to the squad at this level, both on and off the field.

“He’s been taking up his fitness qualifications and has jumped at the chance to come back here. He will help on a day-to-day basis on the strength and conditioning side of things, as well as being part of the playing squad.

“We’ve spoken about life after football and he has shown a keen desire to remain working in the game. He understands his position within the squad and having played with him and witnessed it myself, I know he’ll be a great addition to the changing room as well.”

Varney made 36 appearances for Burton between 2017 and 2018.
