BBC insist Gavin and Stacey to remain on iPlayer amid row over racial connotations

Award-winning sitcom Gavin and Stacey will remain on BBC iPlayer despite being at the centre of a race row.

Fellow British comedy Little Britain was recently taken off streaming networks Netflix, NOW TV, Britbox and BBC iPlayer due to some sketches with David Walliams and Matt Lucas wearing blackface.

Other comedy shows such as The Mighty Boosh and Fawlty Towers have also had content taken down due to controversial or offensive material.

And Gavin and Stacey writers James Corden and Ruth Jones have come under fire on social media in recent days for their labelling of ‘Seth, the black fella’ and ‘Chinese Alan’ in the show.

But the BBC have now assured fans the programme will not be taken down from the archives of iPlayer.

Speaking to The Sun, a spokesperson said: "This change only affects Little Britain."

Gavin and Stacey ran from 2008 to 2010, with three seasons and a Christmas special being broadcast in that time.

The show then returned on Christmas Day last year for a one-off special, with more than 18 million Brits tuning in to watch.

And Matthew Horne - who plays Gavin - recently came out and said he feels there is more episodes to come from Corden and Jones once the coronavirus pandemic allows them to write.

Speaking to Digital Spy, he said: "It’s almost impossible really for James and Ruth to write any more at the moment considering the [lockdown] situation because they don’t like to write remotely, they always have to be in the same room, and that’s certainly not been possible for a long while no.

"But no, I have had no conversations about it other than I really don’t think that personally, my personal view, is I don’t think that James and Ruth can possibly leave it where it is. Because, you know, we left it on a cliffhanger and I don’t think it would be right to leave it there.

"But I’m only speculating, I have no idea. I think when logistics and time permit, they may get their heads together but I don’t know when that will be."
