Boxing fans left puzzled as super-middleweight world champion Billy Joe Saunders hints at retirement

WBO super-middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders has sparked speculation he may be retiring from boxing following a cryptic tweet on social media.

The 30 year-old took to Twitter to thank the sport for ‘all it has done for me’ before signing off with his professional record, 29-0.

He said: "Like to thank boxing for all it has done for me 29/0    ??."

Saunders had a deal agreed to fight pound-for-pound star Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in Las Vegas in May before the coronavirus pandemic put the brakes on the bout.

The Brit then landed himself in hot water after posting a video appearing to show men how to domestically abuse their partners while in lockdown.

Saunders was subsequently suspended by the British Boxing Board of Control, although promoter Eddie Hearn maintained the Alvarez fight remained a goal for later on in the year.

Following his post, fans drew the conclusion he was ready to hang up his gloves, leaving many devastated.

Saunders has not fought since stopping Marcelo Esteban Coceres in the 11th round in November last year.

He is a two-weight world champion having defeated Andy Lee in 2015 to win the WBO belt at middleweight, before capturing the same title at super-middleweight against Shefat Isufi in May 2019.

The biggest wins of his career aside from his world title victories include a split decision win over Chris Eubank Jr in 2014 and a superb points win over David Lemieux in Canada in 2017.
