Dustin Poirier edges past Dan Hooker in brutal UFC lightweight scrap in Las Vegas

Dustin Poirier overcame a stiff challenge from Dan Hooker to win a sensational UFC lightweight bout in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

The 31 year-old world title challenger started poorly, losing the first two rounds to his sharper New Zealand opponent.

But Poirier battled back and ground out the win in what was an incredibyl brutal 25 minutes of non-stop action.

Speaking after the fight, Poirier told ESPN: "That's fighting. A fight isn't a fight until there's something to overcome. That's what we did tonight.

"It was a tough one. Dan came to fight. He's a tough guy."

A grand total of 390 strikes were landed in the contest - 208 by Poirier - the most in UFC lightweight history and fifth-most from any weight class.

Poirier’s victory meant he successfully bounced back from the defeat he suffered last time out against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Saturday night was the eighth show the UFC have put on since returning on May 9 from the coronavirus pandemic.
