Arsenal's David Luiz confirms he is in talks with Benfica

Arsenal defender David Luiz has confirmed he is in talks with Benfica.

It’s been reported by Sky Sports his transfer to Arsenal from Chelsea was a 12-month contract and the Gunners have not offered him an extension.

Luiz told Portuguese paper Record: "I already spoke with [Benfica owner Luis Filipe] Vieira about the return.

"My dream is to end my career at Benfica. When, I don't know, but it will happen... it will, if president Vieira allows me and if the fans want me to come back.

"It will be one of the most beautiful moments of my career."

Luiz spent four and a half years at Benfica which started as a loan deal from Vitoria. At the club he won the Primeira Liga title in the 2009/10 season.

The Brazilian international’s contract with Arsenal will run out on June 23.

The defender signed a £8 million deal with the Gunners on the final transfer day last summer.

If the Premier League side do decide to keep Luiz, manager Mikel Arteta will have an abundance of defenders to choose from.

Calum Chambers will return from injury next season and William Saliba, on loan from Saint-Etienne, is an option.

It is also rumoured that Arsenal are looking to make Pablo Mari’s loan stay permanent.
