Charlton have signed Arsenal midfielder Matt Smith on loan until the end of the season.

Smith, 20, spent the first half of this season on loan at Swindon and scored two goals in 26 appearances for the club.

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer told his club’s official website: “I think he suits the way we play, he’s an energetic midfielder.

“I like that he looks to play forward every time he receives the ball, he’s going to be another good addition to our squad.”

Smith will be in contention for his debut for Charlton in Tuesday night’s home Sky Bet League One game against Portsmouth.

He is the Addicks’ fourth January signing following the arrivals of Ronnie Schwartz, Liam Millar and Jayden Stockley.
