Cambridge goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov has signed a new two-year deal with the newly-promoted U’s.

Mitov, 24, joined from Charlton in 2017 and has since made over 70 appearances for Cambridge.

“I had a good conversation with the manager (Mark Bonner),” Mitov told the official club website.

“He wanted me here, I wanted to be here, and I am really looking forward to at least another two years with the club.

“As soon as I found out that they wanted me, I said to my agent ‘let’s get it done’.

“It’s going to be really exciting next year and the supporters deserve to see us playing here.”

Bulgaria Under-21 international Mitov was the first-choice goalkeeper in Cambridge’s Sky Bet League Two promotion campaign, making 20 appearances, before injury ended his season prematurely in January.

Bonner said: “I am really pleased that Dimi has extended his stay with us and look forward to seeing him continue to improve and rise to the challenge of League One next season.

“He has an infectious personality, possesses all of the qualities we look for in a goalkeeper, and has good experience already for his age.

“All of these elements will help him maintain his progress towards fulfilling his undoubted potential.”
