Morecambe assistant Danny Grainger rues missed chances in draw with Bradford

Morecambe assistant boss Danny Grainger said his side were devastated not to pick up their first League Two win of the season.

An 88th-minute Jack Shepherd goal earned Bradford a 1-1 draw after the visitors had trailed since Cheick Diabate’s own goal after just five minutes.

Grainger’s side dominated the game for large periods but missed a host of chances to extend their lead and had to be content with a fourth successive draw.

Grainger said: “I thought we were excellent and we should have been out of sight after the first half.

“If we had been four or five up at half-time I don’t think anyone would have argued.

“We were totally dominant in the first period and even in the second half they had a lot of the ball but didn’t really threaten us and in my eyes we kept them quiet and the lads are all devastated in there because we deserved the three points.

“When you don’t take your chances there is always a chance the other team can get back into it and that is what happened.

“We are still positive though and that first win will come and when it does we will take some stopping.”

Bradford boss Graham Alexander said his side showed great character to stay in the game and get their point.

He said: “Obviously we got off to the worst possible start but I didn’t want to make three or four changes at half-time because we are trying to build this character.

“How we defended in the first half wasn’t good enough but we showed great character in the second and looked much better.

“We were dominant after the first five minutes of the second half and certainly deserved an equaliser. I believe it was a game of two halves and the second was much more like us.”
