31 December 2020

Shrewsbury’s League One match against Crewe on Saturday has been postponed after a second player tested positive for coronavirus.

It is the third match in the division on Saturday to have been called off, along with the games between Peterborough and Doncaster and Rochdale against MK Dons.

A statement on the Shrewsbury website read: “The health and safety of all staff members at Shrewsbury Town Football Club remains paramount and the club continually takes all necessary steps to protect all where possible.

“The second individual, who will not be named, will also self-isolate in accordance with EFL and Government guidelines and we ask that their privacy is respected.”

League One has been particularly badly affected, and a statement from the EFL read: “Shrewsbury’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Crewe Alexandra on Saturday, January 2 has been suspended.

“The club informed the EFL that they would be unable to fulfil the fixture following recent positive Covid-19 tests and the requirement for players and staff to self-isolate as per EFL and Government guidance in order to mitigate against the risk of further infection.

“The circumstances surrounding the postponement will now be subject of an investigation in accordance with EFL regulations. A revised date for the fixture will be confirmed in due course.”
