Struggling Wigan have boosted their squad with a trio of signings.

Forward Zach Clough and defensive duo Corey Whelan and George Johnston have all joined the Latics, who sit in League One’s relegation zone.

Clough has arrived from Nottingham Forest on a permanent deal running to the end of the season, having last played a senior game of football back in 2019 during a loan spell at Rochdale.

The 25-year-old told Wigan’s website: “I want to play football again. I’ve missed the Saturday feeling, the Friday-night feeling travelling with the lads and being around a first-team environment.

“It’s been a long time coming and I’ve worked really hard for it and it’s a massive relief to sign here and get it done.”

Whelan, 23, has also joined until the end of the campaign, subject to international clearance having last played in the United States for Phoenix Rising.

“America was good and I enjoyed being part of a winning team, which always helps and that’s something that I want to add to Wigan as well,” he said. “I’m a winner and my mentality is that I want to win.”

Johnston, a 22-year-old former Scotland Under-21 international, has signed on loan from Dutch club Feyenoord for the rest of the season.

He said: “When I first heard of the interest it was something I jumped on straight away and something I wanted to get over the line as quickly as possible.

“I want to get games and come into a team where I think I can help until the end of the season.”
