Late rally from Tangled seals Beverley triumph

11 June 2020

Tangled could be one horse to benefit from racing behind closed doors as he registered his first win for trainer Karen Tutty in the Visit tote.co.uk Handicap at Beverley.

Placed in Group races as a juvenile for Richard Hannon, he had dropped to a mark of 73 and was sent off the 4-1 favourite.

Outpaced early, he came with a late rattle to collar Dawaaween and win by half a length for the trainer’s daughter, Gemma.

It turns out the lack of a crowd suited him down to the ground due to his propensity to get excited.

“It ended up being hard work for him because we were a bit slow away and he had a bit to do, but he showed his class coming up the hill,” said Gemma Tutty.

“He needed every yard of the trip. He wasn’t too keen to pass those in front as he hung in behind a little bit, but thankfully he picked up in time.

“He gets quite stressed about the whole thing, but today he was a lot calmer. The fact there are no crowds will be particularly helping him.

“There was one day at Chester he got really wound up because of the atmosphere, so that is why he wears the hood.

“You hope that once they get their head back in front their confidence will return, so hopefully his old form will come back.”

Bought for 17,000 guineas, the Tuttys are left in no doubt the ability still remains within Tangled.

“On the gallops he’s our stable star, but as yet he hasn’t quite reproduced that on the track for us. If he showed his home work on the track, he’d be the best we’d have by a long way – unfortunately it’s not always the case,” said the jockey.

“He gets a bit further and was doing his best work at the finish so we have options with his trip now, too.”

Rowan Scott, on the mark earlier on the card on Nigel Tinkler’s 80-1 winner Annangel, doubled up on Hayadh (7-1) in the Follow Us On Twitter for Raceday Updates Handicap.

Winner of the Thirsk Hunt Cup last season, he was reappearing from a 4lb lower mark for Rebecca Bastiman and held off Hesslewood by a short head.

“He really dug deep for me and did it well in the end. He’s a really tough horse and one to look forward to,” said Scott.

Silvestre de Sousa teamed up with his old ally Mark Johnston to win the Racing TV On Channel 426 Handicap on Old Harbour.

The 3-1 shot made virtually all the running and while he was running on empty at the line, he still prevailed by a short head from Velma.

“He had three runs on the all-weather so he had some experience. I had a good gate and made good use of it. He wasn’t really enjoying the ground so there should be a bit more to come,” said De Sousa.

Hugo Palmer’s Strawberry Rock (15-8 favourite) looked the best horse on show all day in the Stay Alert Median Auction Maiden Stakes.

Ridden by Ben Curtis, who has made a flying start to the season, he was sporting the colours of Palmer’s Irish Oaks winner Covert Love and came home six lengths to the good.
