23 min: De Bruyne goes down looking for a penalty following a challenge from Van Dijk, but Anthony Taylor brings it back for an earlier infringement instead.

The resulting free-kick is easily cleared by the away side.

19 min: SO CLOSE! It’s another ball over the top to Firmino and he clips it in to Salah. The Egyptian cuts inside and rifles a shot past Ederson and onto the base of the post.

The champions are so quick and so, so, so dangerous. It’s scary how quick they turn defence into attack.

18 min: De Bruyne slides a wonderful ball through to Gabriel Jesus and he is through on…nope, offside.

16 min: Liverpool now trying to get their foot on the ball and play a bit of possession football as the game finally begins to settle after a frantic start.

Salah looks to have the beating of Benjamin Mendy over on City’s left-hand side. Sterling going to have to help his full-back out as the game goes on.

Very quick start from both sides but nothing for either keeper to really think about aside from Ederson’s early save from Salah.

12 min: This is about as end-to-end as a game can be without any real chances being created.

Both teams seem to have forgotten about the middle of the pitch and are instead just trading possession between each penalty area.

You’d have to say it’s been a brighter start from the visitors, but City have had their moments.

9 min: We’ve got a fireworks display at the Etihad as everyone is drowned out by a barrage of what we can assume is red skylight.

On the pitch, De Bruyne burst through the middle but can’t pick out Foden when you’d reallty expect him to do so.

TAA then finds Firmino at the other end but he can’t direct his header goalwards.
