British world title challenger Luke Campbell is still confident his next fight will be for the WBC lightweight belt despite the coronavirus pandemic putting it in jeopardy.

The 32 year-old Olympic gold medallist was scheduled to take on Javier Fortuna in Maryland for the title on April 17, but it has now been postponed.

And that has brought with it confusion because the previous champion, Devin Haney, was given the status of 'champion in recess' as he would not have been able to defend the title in April due to an injury.

But now because of the delay, Haney is calling on the WBC to reinstate him as the full champion and take away the title status of Campbell-Fortuna because he will be ready to fight once boxing resumes, something the Brit vehemently believes should not happen.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "[Haney's situation] shouldn't make the slightest bit of difference. This fight has already been made and it's already been chosen for the title so as soon as we go back to normal, nothing should change.

"We're still fighting for the title and then he has the right to fight the winner if he chooses to do that for his first fight back after an injury, that's down to him and his team.

"This fight is made and it is still scheduled, it will have to be rescheduled for a date when we can fight but it's a fight that's already been scheduled before this happened. There's nothing that should change that at all."

The WBC are yet to make a formal announcement as to whether Campbell will still be boxing for the belt when he eventually takes to the ring against Fortuna.

All shows in the US have been postponed for the foreseeable future, while the British Boxing Board of Control have suspended all sanctioned shows in the UK until at least May 31.
