NBA 2019-20 season to restart at Disney World as bosses approve 22-team format

The NBA’s board of governors has approved the 2019-20 season to restart at Disney World, Florida with a 22-team format.

The season was suspended on March 11 due to the coronavirus, and now thirteen Western Conference teams and nine Eastern Conference teams will play eight games to determine seedings for the play-offs.

There is also the possibility of a play-off tournament for the final spot in the Eastern Conference and Western Conference postseason fields, a source told the Associated Press.

EPSN reported that of the 30 teams, 29 voted for the season to resume on July 31, with the last possible date of the NBA Finals on October 12.

Teams could be allowed to open training camps later this month before arriving at the Disney complex around July 9.

However The National Basketball Players Association must agree to the plan before it is confirmed.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement: "The board’s approval of the restart format is a necessary step toward resuming the NBA season.

“While the Covid-19 pandemic presents formidable challenges, we are hopeful of finishing the season in a safe and responsible manner based on strict protocols now being finalized with public health officials and medical experts.”

The ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando includes a 5,000-seat indoor basketball facility.

Under the new decision, seasons for Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls and Charlotte Hornets are over.

However The Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and Memphis Grizzlies are in play-off positions in the Western Conference.

Teams in play-off positions in the Eastern Conference are The Milwaukee Bucks, Toronto Raptors, Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, Indiana Pacers, Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets and Orlando Magic.

The top 16 teams in the Eastern and Western conferences are set to be joined by teams currently within six games of eighth place in the two conferences.

These are The New Orleans Pelicans, Portland Trail Blazers, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference and the Washington Wizards in the Eastern Conference.
