Royal Ascot day four – In Pictures

18 June 2021

Rain a major pain

Prospects of racing even taking pace were on a knife edge at lunchtime, following torrential downpours (PA Wire)

But no dampening of spirits

Rain or no rain, those lucky enough to be there were making the most of it (PA Wire)

Mud, glorious mud

Gavin Ryan covered in mud during the opening Albany Stakes (PA Wire)

Supreme Sandrine

Sandrine looked smart in the Albany, making light work of the conditions to give Andrew Balding a second two-year-old winner of the week (PA Wire)

All hail Alenquer

Alenquer oozed star quality in the King Edward VII Stakes, to leave Tom Marquand all smiles. A Group One target is surely on the horizon (PA Wire)

Commonwealth drama

Campanelle and Dragon Symbol fought out a titanic finish to the Commonwealth Cup. But Dragon Symbol drifted to his right and it was inevitable the stewards would take a close look. They did, and promoted Campanelle and Frankie Dettori to first place (PA Wire)

Frankie all smiles

Frankie Dettori celebrates with the Commonwealth Cup trophy - his 76th Royal Ascot success (PA Wire)

Back on top

In the very next race after being demoted aboard Dragon Symbol, Oisin Murphy bounced back to win the Coronation Stakes with Alcohol Free. Another winner for Balding and definitely in the higher echelons when it comes to miling three-year-old fillies (PA Wire)

But briefly on the floor again!

It possibly summed up Murphy's day that he was unseated from Alcohol Free after the line. No harm done, though (PA Wire)

Eventually unstoppable

Murphy rounded off a day he won't forget in a hurry with victory aboard Quickthorn in the Duke of Edinburgh. He leads the way in the jockey standings going into the final afternoon (PA Wire)
