UEFA executive insists Europe's domestic competitions must finish as Premier League awaits news on Euro 2020

UEFA executive Lars-Christer Olsson says the priority for the rest of the season must be to finish the domestic leagues.

All elite football in England has been suspended until April 3 at the earliest, while all the other top five European leagues in France, Spain, Germany and Italy have also been postponed as a result of coronavirus.

And ahead of teleconferences between UEFA chiefs today - where they will discuss what to do with regards to Euro 2020 and the conclusion of the domestic seasons - Olsson is adamant the club campaigns need to be concluded.

He said: “The priority should be to finish the current seasons. Otherwise you don’t know who is going to play in European club competitions next season.”

Olsson also spoke about the possibility of the season being made null and void if it cannot be finished.

And he was keen to stress that TV rights-holders such as Sky Sports and BT Sport will have a duty to try to help football survive if that is to be the case.

“There may be a financial penalty if you do that (make the season null and void) as the number of matches is very important in media contracts," he added.

“But if that does happen then everybody has to make their contribution to the situation, including rights holders.”

The Premier League's chief executive Richard Masters will be on one of the teleconference calls today where it is expected he will be told by Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin that the European Championships will be postponed.
