UFC Dublin event in August cancelled due to coronavirus pandemic

The UFC’s Dublin show scheduled for August 15 will not go ahead due to government restrictions around the coronavirus pandemic.

Event organisers had planned to stage the show at the 3Arena in the Irish capital, but that is no longer possible.

It would have been the first UFC show in the country for almost five years, with the last being UFC Fight Night: Holohan v Smolka in October 2015.

A statement from the UFC read: "Due to current government restrictions on public gatherings in the Republic of Ireland, UFC Fight Night originally scheduled for August 15th will not take place as planned at the 3Arena in Dublin.

"UFC looks forward to returning with an event in the near future."

The UFC have been praised for their ability to stage shows during the pandemic, with boss Dana White spearheading the company’s return in Florida on May 9.

This was before any other major sport had returned to the United States.

Since then, the MMA organisation have staged a further six shows behind closed doors and managed to minimise the risk of positive coronavirus cases extremely effectively.
