WBC mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte looks set to be kept waiting for a shot at the title after Tyson Fury’s promoter Bob Arum insisted a fight with Anthony Joshua remains their priority.

Whyte has been in line for a world title fight since 2017 but has been forced to stay patient as Fury, Joshua and Deontay Wilder go down other avenues with the respective belts.

And while Whyte is scheduled to fight for Fury’s WBC if the Gypsy King comes through Deontay Wilder at the end of the year in their trilogy bout, Arum has revealed that a clash with Joshua would still take precedence.

"If Joshua is successful against Pulev and Fury is successful against Wilder, then everybody on both sides of the pond will look at Fury and Joshua as the fight that they wanna see," he told talkSPORT.

"And they don’t care about a mandatories, whether it’s Usyk on the WBO side or Whyte on the WBC side. People don’t care, they would be outraged.

"Everybody wants to see, assuming they’re both successful in their next fights, Fury and Joshua for the undisputed heavyweight championship.

"I think the pressure from the public, the pressure from everybody will see that fight through."

Joshua’s WBO mandatory Oleksandr Usyk could also present a problem for a fight with Fury, although Whyte has been waiting longer for his WBC title shot so that would seem the biggest hurdle to overcome.

There is also the matter of Whyte’s fight against Alexander Povetkin on August 22, a contest he has to win to keep in the mix of heavyweight contenders.

Olympic gold medallist Povetkin, 40, has only lost twice in his long career against Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko.
