Formula 1 launches virtual Grand Prix to plug racing void left by coronavirus

With the start of the Formula 1 season postponed due to the coronavirus, organisers have launched an Esports Virtual Grand Prix series to help fans still get their racing fix.

A virtual race will take place at the time of each of the cancelled races, starting with the Virtual Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday at 8pm.

Drivers will use the F1 2019 PC video game to compete. The first virtual GP will be on the Sakhir track and will be a half-length race of 28 laps and also feature a qualifying session.

It is intended to provide light relief for fans during a turbulent time, but also provide entertainment and focus for drivers until the future of the 2020 season becomes clearer.

The first race of the series will see current F1 drivers line up on the grid alongside a host of stars to be announced in due course," said F1.
