British Gymnastics women's team qualifies for Tokyo 2020

The British Gymnastics women's team have qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after a seventh place finish in qualifying at the Artistic World Championships in Germany.

The event saw Alice Kinsella, Becky Downie, Ellie Downie, Georgia-Mae Fenton and Taeja James battle it out in the individual apparatus, with their scores counting towards Britain's team total.

The top nine teams received qualification, excluding USA, China and Russia who earned their place from last year's world championships.

In the individual events, Becky Downie finished fifth in the uneven bars, landing her a spot in the final. She scored 14.000 in a high difficulty routine and will be seeking her first world medal.

On the beam, Fenton finished in tenth, narrowly missing out on her place in the final. She also competed in floor scoring 12.500, joint with teammate James.

The last individual event was the vault, Britain's final chance to seal qualification for Tokyo and for the team finals. Kinsella scored 14.300 earning her spot in the all-around final next week after several consistent performances in the other individual events.

Ellie Downie produced her best ever performance securing 15.100 points. She finished in fourth place and will be competing in the vault final.

She said: "Finishing on vault I knew I just had to go for my big routine both for the team and for myself. It was an emotional rollercoaster but to end it so well and for the team to have performed so well overall is the main thing."

Her sister Becky added: "There was definitely a lot of pressure coming into the worlds, especially because of the Olympic qualification and with last year just missing team final, we knew we needed to go out there, do what we trained and we'd be fine."

The finals take place on October 7 in Germany.
