Neville selects his longlist for Team GB squad, saying 'Olympics is bigger than the World Cup'

Phil Neville has selected a longlist for his Great Britain squad ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The England manager, who will be in charge of team GB, said: "We are going through the selection process now.

"The longlist has been selected and the players from all countries have been notified."

Team GB did not have a squad at the 2016 Rio Olympics as the home nations could not decide how to put it together.

England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland agreed last October that they would join forces in a bid to make Tokyo.

England's fourth-placed finish in the Women's World Cup secured qualification for the GB team, so Neville can now call on players from all four countries to build his squad.

Neville said: "It is a difficult process to go through because you have to pay respect to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in terms of contact with their players.

"The process will be open and honest and we will make sure every player has the best opportunity to go to the Olympics.

"I was at the BOA (British Olympic Association) the other day and you associate the Olympics with athletics and swimming and cycling.

"But when we went in there and saw all the medals, Katherine Grainger, Steve Redgrave - I would say it's probably bigger than the World Cup in terms of the global scale.

"It's bigger than the World Cup in England in terms of normal society. It really hits home to you the chats that I've had with the BOA, it's a different level."
