Kate French wins European Silver in modern pentathlon

Britain's Kate French has secured a qualification place for Team GB at Tokyo 2020 by winning silver in the modern pentathlon European Championships.

The 27-year-old totalled 1381 points, just nine behind Lithuanian champion Laura Asadauskaite and just ahead of Bronze medallist Iryna Prasiantsova of Belarus. French's British team mate Jo Muir also performed well to finish just outside the medals.

This was not the first success for the Brits this week after Jamie Cooke won gold in the men's individual competition and Great Britain won gold in both team events as well as the men's relay and the mixed relay.

French, who came fifth at the Rio Olympics in 2016, was delighted with her position this weekend and is looking forward to the chance of a medal in Tokyo.

"I'm over the moon with second place" she said, "I had to really fight today, nothing really came easy."
