Oxford sign former Sheffield Wednesday striker Sam Winnall

Oxford have signed striker Sam Winnall on a two-year contract following his release by Sheffield Wednesday.

Winnall will hope to resurrect his career with the Sky Bet League One play-off finalists after an unsuccessful three-and-a-half-year spell at Hillsborough.

The 29-year-old was a peripheral figure for the Owls and also suffered a serious knee ligament injury during a season-long loan with Derby during the 2017-18 campaign.

U’s boss Karl Robinson told his club’s website: “It was important that we had another experienced striker in the building before the season starts and Sam has scored goals and caused problems for defences wherever he has been.

“It’s an exciting signing and a another piece in the jigsaw for us. We look forward to working with him.”

Winnall scored five Championship goals in 36 appearances during his time at Hillsborough after signing from Wednesday’s South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley in January 2017.

He began his career at Wolves and had loan spells with Burton, Hereford, Inverness and Shrewsbury before joining the Tykes following a prolific spell with Scunthorpe.

Winnall, who could make his debut at Lincoln on Saturday, said: “They are a very good footballing side and create a lot of chances so hopefully I can come here and score goals as part of a successful season.”
