Aston Villa promoted to the Women's Super League after unbeaten season

Aston Villa have been promoted to the Women’s Super League.

The side were six points clear at the top of the Championship with 40 points, and remained unbeaten winning 13 games and drawing one.

Gemma Davies’ side had six games left of the 2019-20 season and were close to securing their spot in the WSL before the coronavirus pandemic.

But the WSL and Championship seasons were ended with immediate effect on May 25 due to the current crisis.

Clubs were given three choices to determine the league standings and voted in favour of points-per-game system, with Villa promoted, Liverpool relegated, and Chelsea as WSL title winners.

Davies was optimistic the side were going to play their remaining fixtures but is happy her team have been rewarded for their efforts.

She said: "We wanted to finish the season on the pitch and win the league by showcasing the work that players and staff had put in to get us to this point.

"We put so many hours, so much hard graft and so much passion into this season that it’s fantastic to have been rewarded for that.

“For every player, staff member and supporter, promotion to the Super League is the realisation of a dream that we’ve all worked so hard to achieve.”
