British record holder Jemma Reekie's coach believes she could be a contender at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics

British middle-distance runner Jemma Reekie's coach Andy Young has backed the youngster to be a Tokyo 2020 Olympic contender.

The 21 year-old recently broke three national records within two weeks in the 800m, 1,500m and mile.

And at the Athletics Grand Prix in Glasgow on Saturday, she stormed to victory in the 1500m with an impressive 30.1 second last lap around the 250m track.

Speaking after impressive display, coach Young said: "It’s pretty special. Not many people have that. I’ve not seen, well near enough anyone who’s got that kind of kick.

"She was probably at the biggest grand prix in the world – and on her home track – so to deliver that at the end of a tough two weeks, with a 30-second last lap, you don’t get much better than that."

The double European U23 champion ran the fastest 800m indoor time in the world since 2006 earlier this month with 1:57:91.

The time would have won Reekie 800m gold at the World Athletics Championships in Doha last year.

When asked if she could be an Olympic contender, Young added: "You’ve still got to remember she’s 21 and this will be her first Olympics.

"But, if you can deliver that kind of performance and you can navigate heats and semis and get to the final and deliver a performance like that, it’s an exciting opportunity."
