Dalilah Muhammad named World Athletics' female athlete of the year while Eliud Kipchoge takes the men's title

Dalilah Muhammad has been named World Athletics' female athlete of the year after a glittering season on the track.

The 29-year-old American claimed gold at the World Championship 400m hurdles in Doha in October, having already broken the world record twice this year.

Muhammed, who will return to the track to defend her Olympic title in Tokyo 2020, said: "It's been an amazing year. It's been a tough year but I'm so thankful. I never imagined ending the year like this."

Unsurprisingly, Eliud Kipchoge claimed the men's crown after becoming the first man to run a sub two-hour marathon in October.

35-year-old Kipchoge completed the 26.2 miles (42.2km) in one hour 59 minutes 40 seconds in the Ineos 1:59 Challenge.

Ethiopian distance runner great Derartu Tulu was named woman of the year while Vikki Orvice, a trailblazing British journalist who died from cancer this year, was honoured with the President's award.
