Dalilah Muhammad pips Sydney McLaughlin in 400m hurdles final to break her own world record

Dalilah Muhammad broke the world 400m hurdles record in an exhilarating race against Sydney McLaughlin to take gold in Doha.

Both Americans beat the previous world record, but the time of 52.16 seconds from Muhammad edged out McLaughin by just 0.07 seconds. Jamaica's Rushell Clayton took bronze with a time of 53.74.

The two stand-out competitors pulled away from the rest of the field early and coming into the final bend Muhammad was slightly ahead of her rival, who she had already defeated twice before this year.

Strangely, Muhammad looked to see where McLaughlin was near the end, which almost cost her the race. But she managed to keep herself in front and in the process broke the world record for a second time in a year, just like she did in the US National Championships.

In the discus throw final, the Cuban pair of Yaime Perez and Denia Caballero battled it out for gold, with Perez coming out on top thanks to her throw on the penultimate attempt. A throw of 69.17m was enough to regain the lead from Caballero, whose attempt reached 68.44m.

Elsewhere, Team GB qualified for the 4x100m relay final by running their season best time of 42.25 seconds. They finished second in their heat behind Jamaica, who won the heat also with a season best time of 42.11 seconds. The other danger in this race, the USA, won the first heat with a time of 42.46 seconds.
