Dina Asher-Smith becomes British golden girl with 200m world title

Dina Asher-Smith became the new golden girl of British athletics with a stunning victory in the 200m final at the World Championships in Doha.

She dominated the race from start to finish, bursting out of  the blocks and recording a time of 21.88 seconds - a new personal best and a new British record at 200m.

American Brittany Brown took silver while Switzerland's Mujinga Kambundji pushed at the death to win the bronze medal.

As Asher-Smith showed in the heats and semi-final, she got off the blocks incredibly quickly and, with a decent draw, handled the bend impressively, opening up a significant lead for the world 100m silver medallist.

She kept her composure on the home straight to become the first British woman to win a world title in the 200m. Understandably, emotion took over as she took her lap of honour, soaking up the achievement and at least managing to find a few clusters of GB fans waving flags and cheering in a, by now, familiar empty stadium.

This caps off an incredible year for the 23-year-old, who is the number one in the world at this distance. It also follows on from the European Championships last year in Berlin where she won the 100m and 200m double.

She also became the first Briton, man or woman, to win a world or Olympic sprint title since Linford Christie in 1993.
