Eilish McColgan breaks mum's 12-year-old record

Eilish McColgan has stormed to the defence of her Great South Run 10-mile title defence and broken her mother's Scottish record in the process.

The 28-year-old led from the start to finish her impressive season with a 10-mile time of 51 minutes and 36 seconds in Portsmouth. This was the second fastest of any Brit with the fastest time recorded by Paula Radcliffe in 2008 when she finished in 51.11.

McColgan's mother Liz set the Scottish record in 1997 with a time of 52.00 but takes some solace in the loss of the record as she is also coach to daughter Eilish so can claim some credit for the achievement.

The McColgan duo are now hanging up the spikes for the season after Eilish's title defence and her 10th place finish in the 10,000m at the World Championships in Doha. Their focus will now be on the Toyko 2020 Olympics.
