GB track star Jemma Reekie says Laura Muir 'taught me everything I know' after breaking three national records in two weeks

Great Britain’s running sensation Jemma Reekie has revealed that teammate Laura Muir has ‘taught me everything I know’ on the athletics track.

The 21 year-old broke Muir's British indoor 800m record at the start of the month and shaved four seconds off her personal best with a time of 1:57:91. The time would have won her the 800m gold at the World Championships in Doha last year.

A week later she then broke Muir’s British indoor 1,500m and mile records which puts her in a strong position for an Olympic medal in the summer.

Reekie said: "Laura’s taught me everything I know. I came to her at such a young age and she took me straight under her wing.

"Slowly I’ve crept up on her. She knows how hard I work and I appreciate how great an athlete she is. On and off the track I couldn’t ask for a better friend and a better training partner.

"She’s helped me through a lot and I’ve helped her through a lot. We’ve always got each other and it means a lot."

Andy Young who coaches the pair believes that 'nothing' will change between the athletes after Reekie's recent success.

Young told Telegraph Sport: "Laura has never treated her as someone further down. They are all good friends and all treat each other with respect and enjoy each other’s performances.

"Laura is still the boss. She is still the experienced superstar. This isn’t likely to create any problems. They are both delighted for each other."

Reekie has won numerous Scottish age-group titles at the 2017 European U20 1,500m and the U23 800m and 1,500m titles last summer.

Muir, 26, has come close to winning Olympic medals but tends to dominate the European Indoor Championships with four gold medals to her name.

Both Reekie and Muir will be battling it out in separate events at the Indoor Grand Prix in Glasgow tomorrow. Reekie will compete in the 1,500m and Muir will attempt to break a world indoor 1,000m record.
