Ireland's Phil Healy breaks 200m indoor national record and Ciara Mageean smashes 3000m personal best at AIT Grand Prix

Ireland sprinter Phil Healy has set a new national 200m indoor record at the AIT Grand Prix in Athlone.

The 25 year-old won with a time of 23.10 seconds in her home country, surpassing Ciara Sheely's 17-year long standing record.

Speaking after her victory, she told the Irish Times: "It’s been a really good winter. Last year I had a bit of a hiccup along the way, breaking my foot, and found it very hard to come back and get the consistency. I love a home crowd too, and to have an international race like this on our doorstep is super."

Elsewhere on the track, Ciara Mageean won the 3,000m and shaved seven seconds off her lifetime best with a time of 8:48.27.

The 27-year-old entered the competition off the back of breaking the national indoor 1500m record at the New Balance Grand Prix in Boston last month.

Following the stellar performance, the two-time European champion said: "I came here with the aim of running fast and getting a PB and I did that. The Irish record is held by a fantastic athlete in Mary Cullen and it's not going to come easily. But hopefully I'll get it one of these days."
