Katarina Johnson-Thompson makes stunning start to chase for heptathlon gold

Katarina Johnson-Thompson is off to a brilliant start as she pursues a dream gold medal in the heptathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Doha.

Johnson-Thompson recorded the fourth-best first day score in history with a points total of 4,138 and holds a 96 point lead ahead of world champion Nafissatou Thiam going into tomorrow.

Johnson-Thompson achieved two personal bests in the 100m hurdles and the shot put to cap a stunning first day of competition for her. After her time of 13.09 seconds in the 100m hurdles, she could hardly contain her excitement.

In the high jump, she reached a height of 1.95m before a 13.86m attempt in the shot put, which was 71cm further than she had ever thrown before.

She is looking for her first outdoor medal and with the long jump coming up tomorrow, she could very well be on her way to winning gold, to follow her Commonwealth title from last year.

Sophie McKinna threw a personal best of 18.61m to reach the shot put final. She finished third in qualifying group A and has a real chance of a medal.

Elsewhere, fellow British hope Laura Muir looks to be back to full fitness after breezing through to the 1500m semi-finals.

The Scot had not raced since July 20 at the London Anniversary Games due to a calf injury, but her third place finish in her heat ensured her qualification to the next phase. She finished with a time of four minutes and 7.37 seconds.

Sarah McDonald also qualified from the first heat, but Jemma Reekie's time of four minutes and 12.51 seconds was not enough to reach the semi-finals.

In the 5000m, Eilish McColgan has made it through to Saturday's final with a time of 14 minutes and 55.79 seconds. With her mother Liz having won the 10,000m in 1991, she will be looking to emulate her and aim for a medal. Team-mate Laura Weightman also reached the final with a time of 15:02.24.
